Amadeus – movie in concert
No film has portrayed Mozart’s music as sensuously as Miloš Forman’s 1984 masterpiece “Amadeus” – which celebrated an extraordinary haul of eight Oscars. From opulent balls to thundering carriage rides, from intimate scenes in quiet chambers as manuscripts are brought to life, to the overpowering ecstasy of the grand operatic stage: “Amadeus” shows the glorious life – and ultimately the shattering death – of the musical genius. Mozart’s touching story is told from the perspective of the composer Antonio Salieri, who was destroyed by his rival’s sheer genius – which causes him to swear a bitter oath against God. Conducted by Kevin Griffiths, the City Light Symphony Orchestra performs Mozart’s works live with its inimitable style, to include the dramatically charged Symphony No. 25 in G minor and the touching slow movement of the “Gran Partita” for ten wind instruments. And spine-tingling moments are guaranteed with excerpts from choral works such as Mozart’s Mass in C minor or the Requiem performed by the Zürcher Sing-Akademie.
