ou can now burn down everything that I have written so far and that you have unfortunately printed! Carmina Burana is the beginning of my collected works! “ This is what Carl Orff wrote to his publisher in 1937 after the successful premiere of the work.
The music owes its fame and popularity not only to numerous appearances in commercials and feature films: the choral work captivates with its refined simplicity and stirring rhythms and this very particular character is brought out splendidly in our reduced version for choir, two pianos and 6(!) percussionists.
We dive into the exceedingly human themes of love, happiness and prosperity, but also in the pleasure and danger of physical stimuli, alcohol consumption, gluttony and gambling. One may quietly marvel at how little our species seems to have changed over the centuries: Carl Orff took the texts for his work from the "Beurer Lieder", a collection of secular songs in Middle Latin, Middle High German and Old French written in the 11th and 12th centuries.
