2001 - A Space Odyssey
with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Frank Strobel conductor
ig cinema? It was yesterday. Today, films with live orchestras set the tone - and that is meant quite literally. This evening the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich will become a film music orchestra. The Zurich Sing-Akademie contributes the title "Lux aeterna" by György Ligeti; Andreas Felber acts as sound master and Frank Strobel is responsible for the overall musical direction.
Stanley Kubrick's film "2001 - A Space Odyssey" is regarded as a masterpiece of film history. The legendary director has once again rejected various film music concepts, even having Alex North compose the first half of the film completely through - only to announce at the first internal studio screening that he would now resort to a so-called temp track, i.e. a mixture of various already existing pieces of music. Among them were works by Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss, Aram Chatschaturjan and - right in the opening sequence - György Ligeti with "Lux aeterna".
