HÄNDEL IN ROM
with Orchestra la Scintilla, Florian Helgath conductor
he festive opening of our concert series "Les Concerts" with Orchestra la Scintilla in March had been planned with Bach's Mass in B Minor. Due to the Corona crisis, we had unfortunately to change our plans. We are now proud to announce our eagerly awaited premiere with the programme "Händel in Rome".
What is as good as normal in today's world was a fantastic adventure for the just 21-year-old George Frideric Handel: a study visit abroad, more precisely to Italy! In 1705/06, the young composer undertook the strenuous and rather dangerous journey to Rome. There it was possible for him to hear and analyse the Italian style of composition and to make it his own - at least in part. Alessandro Scarlatti was an unavoidable musical celebrity there, whom the young Handel got to know and who naturally inspired him greatly. Starting with rivalry, the two composers managed to develop friendship and mutual respect.
More than three hundred years later, a contemporary Swedish composer dares to translate the Baroque musical rhetoric. With his piece IN OTHER WORDS Thomas Jennefelt succeeds in creating an incredibly exciting sound structure for choir, soloists and baroque orchestra, which would certainly correspond to the atmosphere of departure of a young Handel in Rome, overwhelmed by impressions of this metropolis.
The listener can expect an intensive musical journey just like the young Handel at that time, which he can undertake with amazement and pleasure together with both ensembles.
