Our concert tour with the Basel Chamber Orchestra brings us home to the Tonhalle Maag - and we have a very special Easter programme for you! Joseph Haydn, the grandmaster of the symphony and inventor of the string quartet, also wrote important church music. For example, these two masterpieces from the 1760s.

After his superior died and Josef Haydn was promoted from deputy Kapellmeister to Principal Kapellmeister of Esterházy, he was allowed to write vocal music for the court in addition to instrumental music. Which he did immediately: first with an extensive setting of the Mass and then in 1766 with the medieval Latin poem "Stabat Mater", which had long been used as a prayer text. The work soon met with great approval from the highly respected Johann Adolf Hasse, and within a short time it was known far beyond the borders of the country, not to mention that it decisively increased Haydn's fame in Europe.

We are looking forward to our third project with René Jacobs in the 2019/20 season.
